ReceiptJar is a leading receipt scanning app that lets you earn cash and free gift cards for taking photos of your shopping receipts.
It's a fun way to turn your next shopping trip into extra cash. But how much does this app pay? And is it worth the download?
I downloaded the app to test it out. And my ReceiptJar review is covering how it works, its earning potential, and what some other good apps are that you can use.

Is ReceiptJar Legit?
ReceiptJar is legit and lets you earn rewards by taking photos of your receipts. The app has a 4.7 star rating on the Apple App Store and 4.5 star rating on the Google Play Store with thousands of positive reviews.
This app is a fun way to save more money. And if you've used apps like Fetch and Ibotta, ReceiptJar is an excellent fit.
This app is certainly less popular than some of the major reward apps out there. However, it offers competitive rates and a wide variety of rewards, making it a great app for any frugal shopper.
What Is Receipt Jar & How Does It Work?
You can download ReceiptJar for free on the Google or Apple app store. From there, you create an account with your email or Facebook account.
After that, all you need to do is take photos of your receipts to earn points. ReceiptJar pays you with points for each receipt, and you can then cash out your points for free gift cards and PayPal cash.
Receipts have to include the date, store name, and total amount you spent. You have to ensure you take photos in decent lighting so information on your receipt is visible. And for long receipts, you have to take multiple photos. However, the entire process is super simple.
ReceiptJar also lets you sync your account with various food delivery apps and online accounts. This includes popular retailers like:
- Amazon
- Walmart
- Costco
- Instacart
- Kroger
- Target
- UberEats
- DoorDash
Digital receipts automatically credit to your ReceiptJar account once you make a purchase, so you don't have to do anything!
How Much Does ReceiptJar Pay Per Receipt?
ReceiptJar pays different amounts of points depending on the shopping total on your receipt. More expensive bills pay more points than less expensive receipts. Here is how the point system works:
- 5 points for $10 and under
- 10 points for $11 to $50
- 15 points for $51 to $100
- 20 points for purchases over $100
This is a similar system to what apps like Receipt Hog and ReceiptPal use. In other words, you just get paid for uploading shopping receipts and it doesn't really matter if you buy specific products.
In contrast, apps like Fetch and Rakuten require you to shop from certain brands or to buy specific products. So, ReceiptJar is much simpler to use.
Just note that receipts cant be older than 7 days. Once you earn 120 points per week or upload 20 receipts, every receipt after that is only worth 5 points. We find this cap to be fairly limiting. But it's still a fun way to make money while shopping that doesn't take much effort.
Other Ways To Earn With ReceiptJar
ReceiptJar also lets you earn points by answering online surveys. However, this isn't a dedicated survey app, so the surveys are going to be few and far between.
Being consistent with using the app also helps you earn more points. If you upload every week, you get to fill up three blue jars, which grants you access to a fourth “gold jar.” Every time you reach this gold jar milestone, the reward increases. Eventually, your gold jar can be worth 490 points. It will take 30 months, but once you’ve reached that level you’re essentially looking at an additional 6,000 points per year.
ReceiptJar also lets you earn more by completing “missions” within the app for filling out your account and knowledge of the app. For instance, you get 100 points for every online retailer you synch up with Receipt Jar. If you shop at all 8 online retailers they integrate with, plus your email, that’s 900 points right there…90% of the way to $5.
There is also a periodic prize draw. When we signed up, Receipt Jar was running a weekly prize drawing for a few weeks, where you need to follow the Instagram Page for a shot at winning 10,000 points ($50).
Last but not least, there is the ReceiptJar referral code. You can get 200 points for every signup. All it takes is 5 signups and you’ve earned $5, which isn't too bad.

Cashing Out & Rewards
ReceiptJar lets you cash out with free PayPal money, Visa gift cards, and various gift cards once you earn 1,000 points. Rewards start at $5, which is fairly low in the world of reward apps.
Some of the gift cards you can redeem include ones to retailers like:
- Amazon
- Applebees
- Athleta
- Barnes & Noble
- Bath & Body Works
- Crate & Barrel
- CVS
- Domino’s
- Krispy Kreme
- Lowe’s
- Macy’s
- Olive Garden
- Petco
- Starbucks
- Swarovski
- Walmart
What Stores Work With ReceiptJar?
ReceiptJar accepts receipts from stores in the United States, Canada, and Australia. However, receipts with $0 in purchases, like bank receipts or ATM withdrawals, don't qualify. Handwritten receipts aren't accepted either. The same goes for service receipts like bus tickets are not accepted.
You can't submit return receipts either. So, in short, ReceiptJar only accepts receipts from stores where you've made a final purchase.
How Much Are ReceiptJar Points Worth?
ReceiptJar rewards start at $5 for 1,000 points, which means one point equals $0.0005. However, you get small redemption discounts if you save up for larger rewards. Here's how the tiers work:
- 1,000 points for $5
- 1,900 points for $10
- 2,900 points for $15
- 3,900 points for $20
- 9,500 points for $50
- 19,000 points for $100
If you have some patience, saving up for a larger reward makes your points go a bit further.
That said, if you do some quick math, it's clear this isn't the highest paying app out there. Even if you upload 200 points a week uploading receipts, at this rate, it'll take you two years to get $100 in rewards.
This isn't bad when you consider it's free money just for selling your data via receipt photos. And you can stack it with other reward apps. But don't expect to get rich by using ReceiptJar.
Pros & Cons

- Works with almost any store
- Wide variety of rewards

The Best Apps Like ReceiptJar
I think ReceiptJar is a great way to earn money when shopping and to make your budget go a bit further. But it's far from your only option.
Some other excellent reward apps I suggest trying include:
- Capital One Shopping (best for online savings)
- Bridge Money (best for PayPal rewards)
- Fetch (best for groceries)
- Pogo (best for passive earnings)
- Dosh (another passive option)
- NCP Mobile (best for high payouts)
- Upside (best for gas rewards)
If you use a few of these apps, you should be able to keep more money in your wallet quite consistently. And these apps cover both in-store and online purchases.

Is ReceiptJar Safe?
Receipt Jar is safe and doesn't sell your personal data to third parties for marketing purposes. You can bet your bottom dollar, however, that they’re selling your purchasing habits to the stores you shop at and the brands you buy. However, there’s nothing unsafe about that.
Moreover, the data is also de-identified to keep thins anonymous. So, Kroger has no idea that you are the one who bought pineapple slices with the homemade pizza kit.
The email and store account integrations are also safe, encrypted, and endorsed by those same email service providers and retailers.

What Are Some ReceiptJar Referral Codes I Can Use?
ReceiptJar referral codes give you 200 points for free. And you can use my referral code TOMBTC63 when you sign up to earn this bonus.
This isn't the best sign up bonus out there. But it's a nice way to hit the ground running so you cash out much faster.

Is There Customer Support?
There is indeed customer support through the app or website. Support is chatbot-based, but some questions can be escalated to email.
Final Thoughts
After testing out this app, I think ReceiptJar is a fun way to save a bit more money each month. And it's a great addition to your phone if you already use apps like Fetch or Ibotta. However, it takes a while to cash out, so don't expect more than $10 to $50 a year from this app.
That said, it's completely free to use. And if you stack it with a few other money-making apps, you could be looking at hundreds or even thousands of dollars in savings per year.
Hopefully, our ReceiptJar review helps you decide if this app is right for you.
